PCGS |
MS66 |
The mintmark is repunched southwest. The light tan-gold toning is slightly deeper on the reverse. This lustrous and uncommonly smooth Premium Gem is sharply struck and pleasing. A tiny spot is noted near Liberty's knee. The 1916-D is one of just two dates with an obverse Denver mintmark, and the mintage of 1,014,400 is low by the standards of the series. |

PCGS |
MS65 |
A popular first-year issue, the '16-D is also significant as one of only four Walking Liberty half dollar issues to display an obverse mintmark. Endowed with effulgent satin luster, the surfaces are largely free of bagmarks and toned in shades of lavender and medium-gray. Although not quite complete, the strike is well above average for the issue. |

1918-S |
PCGS |
MS64 |
The 1918-S boasts one of the two highest mintages in the pre1941 Walking Liberty HD series. A sizeable total of 10.2 million coins were produced, and circulated survivors can usually be located without too much patience. Mint State examples, on the other hand, are scarce. In addition to full mint luster, this coin is noteworthy because it possesses exceptionally sharp definition for this notorious strike rarity among S-mint Walkers. Even the central highpoints are boldly delineated. Just a few stray abrasions away from a full Gem rating. |

This issue's proof mintage of 21,120 pieces and generally high level of preservation allows for thousands of Gem quality specimens for today's collector. Of course the desirability of these classic mid 20th century proofs is at an all-time high and even this quantity is hardly sufficient to meet the ever-increasing demand. Even a typical Gem example, however, is going to exhibit a minor blemish or mint-caused distraction of some sort and the chances of a specimen approaching perfection are understandably remote. Offered here is one of those lucky few that managed to survive in a virtual pristine state of preservation. Its peerless mirrored surfaces are outlined in some of the peripheral areas in splashes of deep multicolored patina, leaving windows of interspersed near-brilliance. NGC and PCGS combined have seen a total of only four coins grading higher. |
